Wow! What a mouthful that is to say! This week we have focused our writing mini-lessons on what compound sentences are, what coordinating conjunctions are, and how to utilize a comma with these.
The students quickly made a correlation between compound words being 2 separate words joined together and compound sentences being 2 separate sentences being joined together. Then we were able to identify that we use coordinating conjunctions to join the compound sentences together. A quick an easy way to remember coordinating conjunctions is FANBOY (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). We then place a comma after the first part of the compound sentence and before the coordinating conjunction.

The kids are trying their hand at placing these in their final informational writing pieces!
