We are going to be working with measurement concepts in math for the next few weeks. The students will be learning about the customary and metric systems of measurement for liquid volume, mass, and length. We will also work with converting between different units of time and money. Check out some pictures below from a measurement exploration station activity we completed: The students practiced research skills by finding sources on the same topic and categorizing them as primary or secondary sources. We had some great conversations on how to decide if a source is primary (firsthand) or secondary (secondhand).
We have been working on decimal notation for tenths and hundredths. The kids created a classroom number line to practice comparing and ordering decimals.

Check out some pictures of the inventor presentations below: We have been working on adding and subtracting mixed numbers in math. The kids are also learning how to multiply a whole number times a fraction. Additionally, the students were introduced to decimal notation--tenths and hundredths. We played trashcan basketball to record how many shots were made out of 10. The kids practiced recording their stats as fractions and decimals. The students had the opportunity to choose between 2 final projects for our science energy unit: a penguin hut project and an eco-friendly toy project. If groups chose to build a hut for a penguin (ice cube), they designed a house using materials they thought would be good insulators. Then, we tested out the huts to see how well they kept the heat out. If groups chose to build an eco-friendly toy, they used recyclable materials to create a toy that used some sort of energy (solar, electrical, etc.). Check out the houses and toys below!
